Grandma Lucy's Pet Food and Treats
The Grandma Lucy’s goal has always been a simple one – to make pure and simple pet products. They do things the same way you would if you had the time to cook for your pet, taking care to use only human-quality, all-natural ingredients and nothing else. Since 1999, Grandma Lucy’s has maintained a reputation for making only the best pet treats and is constantly developing new products packed with leading-edge nutrition and innovative design. That is why when you choose any of Grandma Lucy’s many products, you know you are making the right choice for your pet.
All ingredients in Grandma Lucy's food and treats are human grade, meaning they are tested in accordance with human consumption standards (yes, YOU can eat this food!). All ingredients are free of chemicals, preservatives, and hormones, and are non-GMO.
All ingredients come from USDA-approved sources; 87% come from U.S. suppliers, many from California, where every bag of food is crafted in a Rancho Santa Margarita facility. NO ingredients come from China. Grandma Lucy's has never been involved in a recall.
Freeze-dried products have a shelf life of 18 months without refrigeration. Organic treats have a shelf life of 12 months (and even horses love these treats!).
All of the freeze-dried products are wheat-free. Artisan foods, Pureformance foods, Valor foods, Macanna foods, Singles Pet Treats and Freeze-Dried Sweet Potatoes are entirely grain-free.
Grandma Lucy's uses only wild caught fish, and never uses meat by-products or meat meal; all meat is lean muscle meat.
All Grandma Lucy's packaging is BPA-free.
What does freeze drying mean?
Freeze-dried food is fresh or cooked foods that have been frozen then had the water removed. The result is a light weight, fresh appearing and tasting preserved food that can be rehydrated with a minimum amount of water.
The process involves freezing a fresh food (fruit, dairy, vegetable, cooked meat or fish) in a special freeze-drying chamber, then removing the water by quickly changing the chamber’s pressure and temperature. This causes the water in the food to change from a solid to a gas without ever changing back into a liquid. This “quick change” preserves the cell structure of the food without compromising vitamins, nutrients, color or aroma.
Dehydration, by comparison, is the process of removing water by using heat and moving air.
There are two problems with this approach. First, it’s difficult to remove water completely using evaporation because most of the water isn’t directly exposed to air. Generally, dehydrating only removes 90 to 95 percent of the water, which will certainly slow down bacteria and enzyme activity, but won’t stop it completely. Secondly, the heat involved in the evaporation process significantly changes the shape, texture and composition of the material, in the same way that heat in an oven changes food. Heat energy facilitates chemical reactions in the food that change its overall form, taste, smell or appearance. This is the fundamental purpose of cooking. Dehydrated foods generally require more rehydration time than freeze-dried foods.
